  • Health Awareness Series: January 2017 - Take 3 Actions to Fight the Flu

    January 23, 2017
    1. GET A FLU VACCINE
      • The very best way to prevent the flu is to get a yearly vaccination. During the 2016-2017 flu season, the nasal flu mist will not be given. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the American Pediatrics Association say the spray does not prevent the spread of the flu.  Only injections will be given.
      • Everyone 6 months old and older should get the flu shot every year by the end of October.
      • The flu in children younger than 6 months old can be very serious. People who take care of infants and toddlers should get flu shots to prevent them from passing the illness to the children.
      • Some people are more likely to get very sick if they get the flu. Those people (and those taking care of them) should get the shot. They include:
        • Young children
        • Pregnant women
        • People over 65 years old
        • People with health problems like diabetes, heart disease or asthma
    1. STOP THE SPREAD OF GERMS
      • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Then throw the tissue out.
      • Wash your hands often with soap and water.
      • Don’t touch your eyes, nose or mouth.
      • Stay home if you are sick.
    1. VISIT YOUR DOCTOR
    2. If you feel sick, visit your doctor. If you test positive for the flu, your doctor may decide to give you an anti-viral medicine.

      • Once you test positive, get the medicine as soon as your doctor gives you a prescription or tells you what to get.
      • Start taking the medicine right away and finish it.
      • The flu is a virus and antibiotics DO NOT treat it

REMEMBER, THE BEST WAY TO NOT GET THE FLU IS TO GET VACCINATED!
